I am so tired of meetings. I love collaborating and helping each other but some people I work with just love jamming up their day with meetings which leaves no time for implimentation and oh yeah, the work!
It's funny that you post this this morning, as I make ready to jet off to (yet another) meeting. As I have clients all over the country, in fact there are none in my hometown, prepping for and traveling to meetings generally takes far longer than the meetings themselves.
Travel time aside, however, I love the human touch that face-to-face meetings afford. I get a much better sense of my clients' feelings, and am able to get to know them better (generally). For the most part, I come out of them feeling good about my work and excited about helping my clients in new ways. Pretty doggone tired, but good nonetheless.
I realize that my meetings are different, by nature, than the standard corporate time-waster (yes, I've done my time in that environment), but I look on my experiences as positive, on the whole.

I find that meetings are much more productive when I chair them...
Why? Because, I start and finish them on time, ensure everyone has documents ahead of time, hold to the agenda, ensure that action items are assigned and then follow up.
Where I work, most people arrive late. But, after 4 months, they now arrive on time to my meetings because they know that I'll start without them and will finish on time.
I also refrain from inviting people who don't really need to be there (or invite them as optional attendees).
Finally, if someone who absolutely needs to be there (or who requested the meeting) is late, I'm gone after 5-10 minutes and they get a polite email saying that they must organise the next meeting.
I think a lot of it is simply a question of discipline... But, it is possible to change the culture of an organisation.

Eric, great note thanks! I'm sure there were some who didn't like the "rules" but then realized it's a much more respectful way to run things.
I have heard it numerous times where the policy is if you are late for meeting, don't bother because the door is closed. Discipline depends on how serious the manager is about the rules. It can be anything from buying donuts for everyone at next meeting, chairing the next meeting to a written reprimand.
Respect in the workplace and internal customer service can go a long way to your success.
